Proton X50 Overview
Proton, a Malaysian automobile company, is planning to
launch its third car in Pakistan in partnership with Al-Haj Group. This time,
it’s another crossover SUV, the Proton X50, that looks exactly like its older
brother, the Proton X70. The only difference is X50 is smaller in size and
cheaper in price than X70. It’s a B-segment crossover that is actually a
rebadged Geely car, “Geely Binyue” or “Geely Coolray”.Proton launched the X50
SUV in Malaysia in October 2020, and the car has taken the local Malaysian market
by storm. Between October 2020 and March 2021, Proton has delivered over 11,000
units of X50 and is still struggling to meet the local demand. Internationally,
the car is available in four variants: Standard, Executive, Premium, and
Flagship.
A Malaysian media channel broke the news that Proton is
planning to launch this car in Pakistan. The company might import the CBU units
for local testing and development, and later, offer the Proton X50 as CKD
units.
Exterior
Proton X50 has a lot in common with the X70. On the front,
you will find the same Proton signature infinite weave grille, LED projector
headlights, and LED DRLs. On the rear, there is a Proton badging on the metal
trim with LED taillights higher up on the body panels like X70. The Flagship
variant has a black coloured roof and 18″ alloy wheels, while the rest of the
line gets 17″ alloys.
Interior
Like the exterior, the interior of X50 also reflects the
influence of X70. Leather seats, metallic touch dashboard, 7” fully digital
instrument cluster, 10.25” touchscreen infotainment system, squarish air vents,
beautiful climate control system, and panoramic sunroof are the interior
highlights of the Flagship variant.
Engine
All four variants of the X50 SUV come with a 1477cc
three-cylinder turbocharged engine. In the flagship variant, this Direct
Injection engine makes around 174 hp and 255 Nm torque. In the other three
variants, the Multi-Point Injection engine produces 148 hp and 226 Nm torque.
All variants are equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Competitor
Proton X50 has a direct competition with the B-segment
crossover SUVs of Pakistan, MG ZS Honda Vezel and Nissan Juke.
Pros And Cons
Proton X50 is the smaller and cheaper version of the X70
SUV.
